Special Directions OnPoint: GIS Certification Guidelines

Directions OnPoint – Special Session: GIS Certification with David DiBiase, President, and Sheila Wilson, Ex. Dir. GISCI

Over the last several weeks, much discussion has focused on the need for changes to the requirements to become a Certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP). The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI), the organization responsible for certification, asked for public comment on an document that provided an outline of changes to the certification process including the addition of an exam to the existing portfolio-based manner in which a GISP is awarded today.

This special session of Directions OnPoint with GISCI president Mr. David DiBiase, and Ms. Sheila Wilson, executive director, will address the results of the public comment period and allow our attendees of this session to ask questions to each. This issue has far reaching implications for the geospatial profession and it is important to seek as much feedback as possible about the recommendations before the GISCI board.

Please join Directions Magazine’s senior editorial staff for this presentation and submit your questions now to participate in this debate.

City of Buford Georgia new Flex based GIS website

City of Buford, Georgia launched a new public GIS website last week. This simple site allows the citizens of Buford to access some basic information such as zoning and aerial photography via the internet without having to come to City Hall. This new GIS website was developed by a team led by Keck & Wood, Inc., a Silver Esri Business Partner Network Member. The site is powered by Esri’s ArcGIS Server and was built using the ArcGIS Server Flex API.

City of Buford GISThe development of the public GIS website was part of a larger project that Keck & Wood has completed for Buford to implement an automated web based work order and inspection tracking system which will be linked to their GIS and Utility Billing database. With implementation of this new integrated system, the City has wireless, real-time data in the field; a public citizen-access web portal; preventative and corrective maintenance scheduling; data integration between third-party customer service and billing software; pre-programmed report options for compliance with regulations such as GASB-34 and CMOM…..the list continues.

The development of the public GIS web application was a true team effort. Keck & Wood was the team leader providing project oversight, quality control, client contact, application and database design requirements and GIS support. Other members of the team included eGIS Associates and Binary Bus. eGIS Associates provided application development support and assistance. Binary Bus, an Esri Business Partner, provides hosting for the website and ArcGIS Server.
